Important first steps We welcome parents and want to include all of your family in the life of the church. St. Peter & St. Paul’s is definitely a church for all ages. We all want the very best for our children.
It is important to us that they have the opportunity to grow, develop and achieve their full potential. The most important thing that you can give your child is the opportunity to learn about God and his love for them. In the early years of a child’s life, they need this grounding in faith, which will be vital for them if they are to develop into happy and balanced adults.
It is unfortunate that this opportunity is not made available to so many children, but at St. Peter & St. Paul’s we will work in partnership with parents to do our best to enable children to be welcomed into the family of the church.
What age? We accept children from 3½ years of age.
When and Where Children's church (Sunday School) is held in the Chapter House at 10.30am every Sunday, except the first Sunday of the month, which is Family Service, and the month of August.
Leaders Those adults who work with the children are drawn from members of the church and are approved both by the church leadership and Social Services. The leaders meet regularly to ensure an effective development programme is provided.
The children are encouraged to be independent in the sessions, but if you would like to remain with your child, please speak with a leader. All of our leaders comply with the church’s Child Protection policy, which has been developed to ensure the safeguarding of children in our care. This was formulated in the light of the Children Act 1989 and ‘Safe from Harm’ 1993 and recommendations made by the Church of England. Copies are on display on the church notice boards.
What happens? The children arrive and meet in the Chapter House. They place their own ‘fish’ in a basket and the register is taken. We start with a prayer and the children share their news. We introduce the theme for the day through a Bible reading and discussion. The children then enjoy an activity linked to the Bible story. This is followed by music, songs and a final prayer, before the children join the congregation for a blessing at the altar. During the final hymn, the children are accompanied back to the Chapter House to be collected by their parents.
