Girlguiding UK

Girl Guiding in India

I have been selected as part of Girl guiding UK to go on a trip to India in August where I will be teaching English.  Last November I went to Pax Lodge, the Girl guiding World Centre in London, along with 54 other guides from Anglia Region where I took part in several activities and was interviewed.  Then, in January, I was one of nine Girl guides that were selected to participate in this trip.  Since then, I have been working hard to fundraise enough money to go.

So far I have raised some money from various different places including a grant from the county, money from the district and the division, from a local company and from a local charity.  The district have organised some fundraising for me- every Guide, Brownie and Rainbow has been given a Smarties tube and asked to fill it with money and there is a fun day planned in July.  My old Brownie pack are running a “Beetle Drive” and the brownie pack that I now help at are planning an Indian themed fashion show.

As well as this, I will be running a Cake Stall at the Parish Church on Sunday 11th May after the 10.30am service in order to help me reach my target of £1,750.

Update: Thank you to everyone who contributed to my fundraising efforts for my Girlguiding trip to India by making and buying cakes at my stall.  I raised £120 and am now well on the way to reaching my target of £1,750.

During my trip, I will spend the first few days in Mumbai getting used to the culture.  The following two weeks will be spent in Sangam, a Girl guiding world centre just outside Pune where we will be helping to teach local students English.

Local collection 2008

This year’s collection is from Sunday May 11th to Saturday May 17th.  It is a national collection and every home in the country should receive an envelope and hence an opportunity to contribute to the wonderful work of Christian Aid, which helps people all over the world to be able to help themselves.  This can be through providing training, tools or infrastructure.  It is a special collection in other ways too.  The collectors are recruited from churches of many denominations and locally Flitwick, Ampthill and Flitton collectors come from Anglican, Methodist, Roman Catholic and Baptist churches.  Last year about £9,000 was collected in this area.

This year we are hoping to exceed this total as several roads were, for one reason or another, not covered.  It is the old story, time goes on, people drop out, more roads are built and the committed collectors are asked to take on more and more roads without others being given a chance to join in this most rewarding task.  This cannot continue!  We have a sizeable congregation and the task is not onerous if sufficient people volunteer as collectors.  Please offer your time this year.  A person collecting in one road will need about two to three hours spread over three days of the collection week – one day to distribute the envelopes, another to collect them in and the third for call-backs to houses where there was no answer on the collection round.  The individual collector does not have to count the money; the bag of envelopes is simply handed back to their church’s representative.

It is a most worthwhile cause that we are collecting for, the majority of householders are very welcoming and it is lovely to meet new people in this way. In good weather it is very pleasant getting some fresh air and in poor weather the householders are often sympathetic so your collection total goes up!

I urge you to speak to me and/or sign up on the list in church to offer help with this year’s collection.  Collectors must be over the age of 18 but children can help with posting the envelopes through letter boxes and accompanying adults who are collecting. There is an old Ghanaian saying "One stick can be easily broken, but many, bound together, are strong."  I feel this really applies to the unity of the churches on this occasion and to the work of Christian Aid.

Daffodil Appeal 2008

Again this year we have supported the cancer appeal. As we did not have Lent boxes this year I asked that we attempt to improve our donations for this cause from around £25.00 to £50.00. You generously responded making the final total £84.36. So, thank you very much.

Annual Easter Monday

Pilgrimage to St Albans

A local group will be walking to St Albans from Studham Church. The day will begin at 8am with breakfast (usually bacon rolls) at Studham and the walk, approximately 12 miles and mostly on public footpaths, will end in the Abbey Orchard by 1pm. This allows time to eat a packed lunch before the procession into the Abbey for the service begins at 2.30. If you are interested in joining the Studham walkers or maybe joining the group later in the day, please contact Susan Sims 404264 for further details and to book breakfast!

What it was really like!

We are now coming to a time when we would appreciate more help and ideas to raise funds to support the Chapter House roof repair and the refurbishment of the kitchen.

The AGM of the Friends is on Monday 21st April at 7.30pm in the Chapter House when we shall be pleased to see anybody interested in joining us.

If you would like more information, please contact:

Cake Stall - a wonderful result!

On Saturday March 22nd, I held a cake stall in aid of Church funds.  Originally planned for the front garden, but snow hampered these plans.  The front room of my little bungalow became the new venue, a bit 'cosy' at times, but we managed.  After selling the remaining cakes after the church services on Sunday I raised a total of £235.00.  Thank you to all who 'got cosy' with us and to those who helped out.  Rachel.

Stewardship Renewal 2008

The results of our recent Stewardship renewal appeal have been fantastic. You have been very generous and in addition to the loyal and existing givers, we have several new people. All this means that if everyone carries out their promised pledge for 2008 then we shall have increased giving by some 27% on last year. The Chancellor will be reducing the basic rate of income tax from 22% down to 20% in April but the good news is that this will be transitional for Gift Aid and we shall still be able to claim the 22% on our tax claim for a few years more. However, because of the increase in giving, our tax claim could be in the region of over £6,000.00. I love it when the taxman gives us money!

Of course, Stewardship is not just about money and we are so fortunate that many of our congregation give generously of their time and their talents, without which, we should be very badly off.

So, thank you everyone. If you feel that you are able to give through an envelope scheme and/or wish to gift aid your donation or set up a standing order at the bank, please ask for further information.

Fairtrade Fortnight 2008

25th February - 9th March

As a Fairtrade Parish we are supporting Fairtrade Fortnight. Throughout the year, like many others, we support disadvantaged producers in the developing world making sure that they get a better deal for a whole variety of consumer goods. Watch out for local Supermarket promotions on such items as coffee and tea, bananas, roses, chocolate, wine, clothing and the Fairtrade Everyday cookbook. You can even open an ethical bank account.

All this means that producers receive a guaranteed minimum price which covers the cost of sustainable production and an extra premium to be invested in social or economic development projects. If we make changes in our everyday lives by choosing to purchase Fairtrade products we can trigger a positive change in people's livers in developing countries. We can directly benefit farmers and workers, enabling them to begin to make changes to their lives and their environment.

So, do what you can to bring about these important changes today!

The Archbishop of Canterbury's Lecture

Statement issued by the

Bishop of St Albans

In a letter written today to church leaders in Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Luton and North Barnet, the Bishop of St Albans, The Rt Revd Christopher Herbert, said that Archbishop of Canterbury’s lecture at the Temple Church on Civil and Religious law in England: a Religious Perspective has raised a major issue for society.

Although he understands the reaction to the lecture, the Bishop concludes from it that Britain is uneasy about how a multi-faith and multi-cultural society should work. “We must treat this very seriously,” he says. “It requires dialogue on all sides but also a real commitment on all sides to live together in peaceful coexistence under the law, and to work together for the common good.” He is certain that this process: “..should not require us as Christians to let go of what we believe to be the core tenets of our faith, nor the Judaeo-Christian underpinnings of our society.”

The issue raised in the Archbishop’s lecture is about how competing rights and understandings in a multi-religious, pluralist society can function within a common legal framework, writes the Bishop of St Albans.

“The Archbishop has raised questions about the appropriate relationships between the law as understood and practised in a Parliamentary democracy and the rights and conscience of religious groups,” says the Bishop. “The law already allows certain rights of conscience, for example, for medical practitioners over whether or not, for religious/philosophical reasons they should carry out abortions; should those rights be extended in other circumstances?” he goes on to ask. Such questions are not off-limits: “In the Parliamentary democracy of Great Britain, law, whilst drawing on long and careful traditions, is constantly subject to change, debate, reform and renewal,” the letter asserts.

Lighting up Flitwick

Thank you to everyone who turned out to support our Christmas light switch-on back in December - we raised £189 on the day and come Twelfth night the total had reached £265.  So thank you for your support and well done to those who won various items.

My next fundraising event will be early this year, as Easter is almost as early as it can be.  On Saturday 22nd March, I will be holding a Cake stall/Coffee morning in my front garden 58 Brookes Road, Flitwick from 10am to 2.00pm.  There will be cakes for sale (obviously), an Easter Egg raffle, coffee and cake.  Please do join us; this year’s charity beneficiary will be the Parish Church.  We all expect the Church to be there for our needs, christenings, weddings, funerals, the 'events' in our lives, but just now the Church needs us.

If you can help with a cake or 10 minutes to make a cuppa, we'd appreciate it. You can call me on (01525) 751577. Thanks. God Bless.

Lighting up Flitwick - raised over £200

This year our Christmas event at 58 Brookes Road will be on Sunday December 9th from 4.00pm with the switch-on at 4:30pm.

I’m hoping a local celebrity will be throwing the switch, can’t say who yet because in time honoured tradition I’m so organised, I’ve only just written to them!!!  This year’s charity will again be the Primrose Appeal, your support for such a worthy cause is much appreciated.  Hopefully we won’t get so wet this year! Thank you.

The Remembrance Sunday church service took place at 10.30am on 11th November at the Parish Church.

The British Legion Service of Remembrance and march took take place on the same day at 2.30pm from the British Legion Hall in Station Road to Flitwick War Memorial and then onto a short service in the Village Hall, and was all very well attended.

Race for Life

Well it's that time of year again, and as I sit writing this, October 14th, my husband kindly tells me that in 11 weeks time it will be over again except the leftovers!  Anyone for Turkey curry?  Again Chris and I will be decorating the front garden with lights for Christmas.  We love to see the children’s faces as they walk past and even some adults look and smile.  Isn’t that what Christmas is all about being happy, smiling and remembering those perhaps less fortunate than ourselves?

This year’s event will be on Sunday December 9th, from 4.00pm with the switch-on at 4:30pm. Thank you.

Harvest Festival 2007

Our Harvest Festival celebrations begin on Saturday, 6th October with a Supper in the Chapter House at 6pm. A list will appear sometime in September for you to sign if you intend coming. On Sunday, 7th October our Family Service will be led by the Guides. As in recent years we ask everyone attending to bring bottles, packets, tins, jars and even perishable goods and these will go to Bedford Family Care. The Bishop of St Alban’s Harvest Appeal will be supporting a Christian Aid partner in El Salvador, Procares, which helps farmers to grow new crops, making a huge difference to their families' diet, and for this there will be a retiring collection at Harvest services. Please give generously.

The Annual Cycle Ride in aid of Historic Churches

raised £473 on Saturday 8th September 2007

On Saturday 8th September, the National Annual Sponsored Cycle Ride in aid of our Historic Churches will take place once again. The volunteers from our church, so far, are Don McKeand and John Russell, who will be inviting sponsorship from church members, friends, neighbours and relatives for this important fund raising event, which can be quite arduous, especially if the weather is inclement.

Last year, £600 was raised and sent to the organisers. As usual, half of this was returned to The Friends of Flitwick Parish Church. We hope for an even greater input this year.  Participation also gives us a better opportunity to obtain a grant from the Historic Churches Trust for the much needed work on our church walls, Chapter House roof and for the kitchen rebuild.

Please sponsor our members, either directly or through the lists on the notice boards.  Any intrepid cyclists would be welcome to take part.  Forms are available from me.

Our Diocesan President and our Diocesan Vice President attended the service and celebrations helped to make the occasion really special.

Moonwalk 2007

THANK YOU all very much for your generous sponsorship for breast cancer awareness.  It was a much more enjoyable experience this year walking the streets of London along with 16,000 others.  The weather was good - no rain and I only felt cold after the finish!

We started at the back of the field at exactly midnight and crossed the finishing line at 3.45am and were back in our beds by 6am!  So I failed in my target time of 3½ hours - my only excuse is that it was very, very busy and there were lots of bottlenecks and traffic to negotiate when it was impossible to walk at all.  One of the most surprising things was that London does not stop buzzing- all night long there were people wandering around, buses, taxis and cars everywhere.

I raised a total of £436.50 and the group as a whole raised approximately £3,500!  Well worth the effort.
